Jen's Sneak Peek!

I had an absolute blast doing my first ever Maternity Photoshoot! A friend from work told me that her sister was looking for a maternity photographer, and since I was still building my portfolio, would I be interested? Would I??! I was so fortunate to make two new friends and have so much fun in the process. Jen and her husband are so sweet and so obviously in love, it came through in every shot. He had his hands all over her belly and would kiss it without me even having to ask :) And even though I had told them I wasn't charging them, they still gave me a giftcard to the Movie Theater for me and my sweetie! Such an adorable couple and I can't wait to meet Sophia!

Grandparents Day

One thing I missed out on growing up was Grandparents. I don't have a close bond with them at all. In fact, now that I think about it.. I only have one left! My Grandma... not really the grandparenting type I guess. I only saw her a few times growing up and she isn't really warm and fuzzy. I want my kids to have their grandparents around them, watching them grow and showing them off to strangers in the grocery store line. Bragging about them over lunch dates and being as involved as possible :)

Well, all that to say.. the grandparents I saw today were incredible! I had the honor of assisting the insanely-talented Jen O'Sullivan at Grandparent's Day! I got to took group shots and some candids of the students with their grandparents.

Check out this grandpa with his snazzy pants! I just HAD to sneak a shot of his amazing getup!

I was testing out some manual focusing techniques and I got this cute orchid!

I certainly hope this was the first of many photo-adventures to come! These were just a couple shots that I retouched really quick. I'm going to try to shoot at least 3 times a week so get more comfortable with everything!

This is my fabulous wedding photographer, Jen! ...and she says she's not photogenic! Pshh.. c'mon.

Milo Mittens!

Milo!

My little guy. My fluffa-muffin. Schmorker-porkers. Lil' Boogs...Milo Mittens.

Milo is a Scottish fold. Which generally would mean that his ears would be folded like a fortune cookie but, unfortunately, those adorable ears come at a price! So I decided to skip the folded ears all together. You see, you can't breed 2 Scottish Folds together, they end up deformed, and so you have to breed them with either British Shorthairs or Persians. About half of the kittens will end up with folded ears and the others will get normal ears. Being on a budget when I was kitten shopping I decided that paying $500 for fortune cookie ears was a little silly, so we ended up with Milo, the "Perk Eared Fold".

Milo was such a little trooper today. I took him to the vet to get fixed and when I picked him up he looked like this:

Within minutes however, the little knucklehead was trying to chase around a toy mouse but was too dizzy to really be that much of a threat. Anyways, all of that to say, I'm really proud of my brave guy and I'm so happy that he's home :)

I love flowers...

...but not florists.

Enjoy a sampling of some of the flowers I'll be using for my May 2010 wedding! Peach roses and decorative cabbage!! Unique but not weird. Well..not too weird.

Flowers were never high on my list of priorities for my wedding. I've always loved flowers, loved their smell, their vibrant colors... But of all the things that make up a wedding, flowers got cut down because I wanted a nicer dress and a nicer photographer!

I figured that I didn't need the stress of making my own bouquets on my big day, so I scheduled a consultation with a florist (who shall remain nameless). My mom and I went to meet this woman at Starbucks where we waited..and waited. She was 20 minutes late before I got a phone call telling me she had gone to the wrong Starbacks and she was on her way. Once she arrived, she pulled out a cd with pictures of her work on it and thank goodness I had brought my laptop along with me because I would have had no way to view her portfolio!! Apart from the disk of photos (which were all teeny-tiny thumbnails) she brought 2 or 3 bridal magazines and started flipping through the pages asking me what I liked. And as I was pointing out gorgeous bouquets, crafted by the amazingly talented Martha Stuart, I was thinking to myself.. "I don't need to see Martha's work..I need to see YOUR work" But I kept that thought to myself as I pointed out a stunning fluffy flower and asked what it was. I was sitting between my mom and the florist and my mom looked at me and said, "Oh that's a ranunculus." and the florist (who hadn't heard my mom" promptly said, "That's a rhinoceros".

A rhinoceros.

The large animal with the horn, native to Africa...yeeeeaaahh.

I pretended not to notice and we kept flipping though Modern Florist. She kept trying to tell me that roses with pearls would look really nice, and while I agreed with her, the theme of our wedding is more of a Vintage-Garden Party thing.. So I asked her if she had any suggestions that would fit better and I told her that I wanted weird stuff in my bouquets, and if it was normal (roses, baby's breath, etc...) I probably wouldn't like it. She got this crazy look in her eyes and said, "I like weird too! I have a great idea!"
Me: "...okay..."
Crazy Florist: "I have a friend...she makes these hair bows...WE CAN PUT THEM ON THE TABLES!"

I tried to keep that thought out of my mind and I asked her what her prices were, figuring that if she was super affordable I could pretend the whole "hair bow" thing had never happened. I told her I wanted the exact same bouquet as my bridesmaids and asked her for a quote. Her prices were $50 per bridesmaid and $165 for me!! Whoo!! I reminded her that I wanted, in essence, a bridesmaid's bouquet.. and she again quoted me $165... More than triple the price for the same bouquet.

I made an awkward chuckling sound and tried to wind up the consult. Then this woman tells me that she'd be e-mailing me a contract and we could confirm her services that day!! I politely told her that this was just a consultation and I still had other florists to meet with. She got huffy and asked me when I could let her know, I told her within 2 weeks, and I left the building.

That was my first and last florist consultation.

Needless to say the flower district sounds so much more appealing now that it did before! My friend, Alex, and I will be venturing into the wilderness of downtown L.A. in search of the perfect flowers for our 2010 weddings. Here's to homemade, and here's to insanity!

More pictures to come!

The Best Wedding Present Ever.

Actually, our first wedding present!

Ever since I was a little kid my mom has used her KitchenAid mixer to make all kinds of amazing treats. Some of the best memories I have from my childhood are of the three of us in the kitchen making cookies and listening to Kenny Loggins :) I probably just watched as she made the cookies...but regardless, I was there. So, of course, it's no surprise when I wanted a mixer of my own! Making brownies by hand is a tireless job and nobody wants to do it. Being the sentimental marshmallow that I am, I really wanted my mom to buy it for me because it would make it more special. However, it's a pretty expensive mixer and she'd already helped us out so much that I figured that we would just put it on our wedding registry instead :)

Kyle and I were driving home from Target after buying wrapping paper (it's amazing what you take for granted when you live with your parents) and we stopped by my mom's place because she had something to give us. My mom usually gives me magazines or snacks so I didn't think much of it. We walk in the door and there's this giant box wrapped up in a black garbage bag with a big white bow made of assorted grocery bags! (My mom isn't white trash at all, keep in mind it's been raining cats and dogs in Santa Clarita all week so she weather-proofed it for us so we could take it home) After debating for about 2 seconds whether to open it on the spot or wait til we got home, I snipped open the bag only to find my mixer. She figured we'd be able to use it much more now than we would in May so she surprised us with an early present!!

Let the cookie making begin.

I love fall.

First off, thank you Walmart for carrying the Better Homes & Gardens collection.. My new tablecloth ($9), leafy placemats (4 @ $2 each), and wicker basket ($8) made it easy for me to transform my ordinary kitchen table into a seasonal picture out of a magazine! I love entertaining and decorating. It had been great getting to decorate our own place, although I'm not sure Kyle really cares all that much.. but he's been great when it comes to pretending that it's the biggest deal in the world. Because when I'm dancing around (super excited about my new tablecloth) someone needs to be my cheerleader.

I'm so thankful for Kyle.

New adventure.

“Well…what is it going to be about?”

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked that question when I mention I’m going to start a blog. I love it. I feel like it gives me an opportunity to tell people what I’m excited about, what I hope to become and who I am now. Trust me; I’ll blog about anything and everything...With an emphasis on hairstyling, photography, baking, fitness, and being a newlywed (almost! Until then I’ll blog about planning the wedding.) So here we go!!

October: My favorite month… Or at least in the top 3! I love going to Lombardi’s Ranch to run around in the dirt and pick out pumpkins. It’s special this year because this is our first October together in our new Condo! I picked out some little pumpkins to decorate our living room, and some really funky shaped squash to use as a center piece on our kitchen table. I love their bright colors and texture!! If I were a fashion designer I would use squash as my inspiration. You can’t look at one without doing a double take and smiling a little bit :)
